N,N-Dipropyl-L-alanine is a synthetic amino acid that contains the side chain of L-alanine. It is used in biochemical research as a substrate to measure protein amino acid binding and protein amino acid exchange reactions. It is also used as a reagent for the determination of enantiomers in organic solvents. The stability of N,N-dipropyl-L-alanine in buffers has been determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection at 254 nm and fluorescence detection. This compound elutes from HPLC columns with an acetonitrile gradient at pH 7 and 8. The derivatization reaction of N,N-dipropyl-L-alanine can be performed by reacting it with o-phthaldialdehyde or dansyl chloride to produce an o-, m-, or p-dansyl derivative respectively.
