Hypertrehalosaemic neuropeptide is a trehalose conjugate that is found in the hemolymph of the German cockroach (Nauphoeta cinerea) and has been shown to stimulate both gluconeogenesis and glycolysis. The mechanism by which this peptide stimulates these processes is not known, but it has been shown to activate a number of different enzymes including glycolytic enzymes, glucose-6-phosphatase, and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. Hypertrehalosaemic neuropeptide also binds to receptors in the brain and activates them, suggesting that it may play a role in neural activity. This peptide has an amino acid sequence identical to that of human glycogenin, which suggests that it may be involved in glycogen metabolism. This peptide has also been synthesized as a recombinant product for use as a modulator of various physiological functions.
