Diethyl 2-ketoadipate is a drug that has been used in the treatment of uraemic syndrome. It is a synthetic compound that was designed to be an alternative to tetronic acid, which is an endogenous metabolite that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of uraemic syndrome. Diethyl 2-ketoadipate binds to diazepine receptors and inhibits chloride ion flow through these channels, thereby inhibiting the secretion of hydrogen ions into urine. This drug also may inhibit the production of hydrogen ions by interfering with the conversion of hydrochloric acid to chloride ions. The reaction time for Diethyl 2-ketoadipate is about 3 hours, which is longer than tetronic acid.
