Ethyl 4-methyl-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine-5-carboxylate is a chemical compound that inhibits herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infectivity. It also has cytotoxic activity against cells infected with HSV-1. The mechanism of inhibition is not fully understood, but it may be due to the inhibition of viral DNA replication and/or protein synthesis. Ethyl 4-methyl-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine-5-carboxylate inhibits plaque formation in cell cultures infected with HSV-1, suggesting that it may inhibit the multiplication of the virus. The compound has been shown to inhibit HSV infection in vivo in mice. This antiviral was shown to have no effect on uninfected cells and was found to be nontoxic in mice, even at high doses.
