Prometryn is a herbicide that inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids. It is a promercurial derivative and an aliphatic compound with a molecular weight of 176. Prometryn has been used as an analytical reagent for the determination of nuclear DNA in cell preparations and has been observed to be stable against hydrolysis. Prometryn is applied to plants as an herbicide. It works by inhibiting the enzyme activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, which prevents the production of malonyl-CoA, an intermediate in fatty acid biosynthesis. This inhibition causes a decrease in the levels of free fatty acids and their derivatives, disrupting plant growth and causing plant death. The mechanism behind this process is not fully understood but it may involve inhibition or opening of ATP-dependent potassium channels or changes in membrane permeability due to lipid peroxidation.
