(2-Aminophenyl)phosphonic acid (2APA) is a synthetic organometallic compound that has been used as an inhibitor of serine proteases. The phosphonic acid group in 2APA binds to the active site of serine proteases, thereby inhibiting their activity. This inhibition can be reversed by adding phosphoric acid. 2APA is used as a coating for various surfaces, such as frictional and reactive surfaces, to increase their durability and reduce the risk of corrosion. It also is used in enzyme assays to inhibit the activity of enzymes, such as phosphofructokinase, and in dyestuffs to prevent the formation of colorants. 2APA inhibits organic acids from forming esters with alcohols or phenols and also inhibits bacterial growth.
