It is also a basic protein and can be used in the treatment of HIV infections. 2-Aminohexadecanoic acid is one of the components of synthetic antiretroviral therapy for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). The synthesis of 2-aminooctadecanoic acid begins with trimethylaluminum, which acts as an alkylating agent. This leads to the formation of a carbanion, which reacts with ammonia in the presence of water to form 2-aminohexadecanoic acid.
