Octadecyl methacrylate is a monomer that polymerizes to form poly(octadecyl methacrylate) (POM), a high-resistance, hydrophobic polymer. POM is synthesized by free-radical polymerization of octadecyl methacrylate in the presence of oxygen and heat. The copolymerization reaction mechanism is initiated by the abstraction of an electron from one of the monomers by the other, leading to radical formation. Radical-initiated reactions are often terminated by hydrogen bonding between radicals on adjacent chains. These intermolecular hydrogen bonds are responsible for the high resistance and hydrophobic properties of POM.
