Pendecamaine is an amphoteric surfactant that is used in implantable devices as an antifungal agent and antimicrobial agent. Pendecamaine has a viscosity of 20 mPas at 25 °C, which is lower than the viscosity of water (1.0 mPa·s). The activation energy for the hydrolysis reaction of pendecamaine is 27 kJ mol-1, which is higher than the activation energy for hydrolysis reactions of other surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium lauryl ether sulfate. Pendecamaine has been shown to be effective against microbial infection caused by Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans in intestinal fluid with an alkanoic acid concentration of 0.5%. It also has activity against herpesviruses in cell culture at a concentration of 10 μM.
