Negundosid is a phenolic compound that has been isolated from the bark of the Verbenaceae tree. It has been shown to have hepatoprotective effects in animal models and also inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential. Negundosid is converted to hydroxybenzoic acid by human liver cells, which is thought to be responsible for its toxicity. The mechanism of action of negundosid on the mitochondria is not known, but it may be due to its ability to inhibit chloride channels or increase intracellular calcium levels. Negundosid can be separated from other components through chromatographic methods, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or gas chromatography (GC).
