It is an isomer of L-tryptophan and has the same chemical properties as this amino acid, such as its ability to be converted into dimethoxyethane, which is used in the synthesis of trifluoroacetic acid. 6-Methoxy-L-tryptophan methyl ester HCl can be synthesized from l-tryptophan through a condensation reaction with n-benzyloxycarbonyl-l-proline and isovaleraldehyde. This conversion uses methylene chloride as a solvent for the reaction.
