2-(Ethylthio)-9H-purin-6-amine is an analog of adenosine. This compound was found to inhibit platelet aggregation, which may be due to its ability to inhibit adenosine deaminase and consequently stop the formation of adenosine. 2-(Ethylthio)-9H-purin-6-amine also has a spongosine inhibiting effect, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme sulfone oxidase that is responsible for the production of sulfones. Furthermore, this compound inhibits potassium permanganate oxidation by chloride ions, which may be related to its ability to bind with potassium ions in a similar manner as adenosine.
