1-Hexylimidazole is a chemical compound that has been shown to have antibacterial properties. It is also stable in water and other solvents, which makes it suitable for use in a polymeric matrix. 1-Hexylimidazole has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the bidentate ligand on the bacterial cell wall, preventing the formation of an enzyme-inhibitor complex with cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis. This inhibits protein synthesis and leads to cell death. 1-Hexylimidazole has also been shown to be effective against a broad range of bacteria, including gram positive and gram negative species as well as acid-fast bacteria. In addition, 1-Hexylimidazole has been found to be effective at inhibiting the growth of both Gram+ve and Gram−ve species when used in wastewater treatment systems.
