Description

Tetradecenylsuccinic anhydride is a synthetic, functional copolymer that is used as a solvent for hydrocarbon oils. It also has viscosity-modifying properties and can be modified with polycarboxylic acid groups to form ester linkages. Tetradecenylsuccinic anhydride is produced by the catalytic hydrogenation of tetradecenyl succinic anhydride using ferrocene as a catalyst. This process forms a nitrogen atom on the molecule's backbone between two carbon atoms. Tetradecenylsuccinic anhydride may also be synthesized from a copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride, which creates three-dimensional networks of carbon nanotubes with functional groups on the surface.
