Methyl 5-chlorofuran-2-carboxylate is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of halogenated carboxylic acid esters. It can be synthesized by reacting chloromercuric chloride with methanol and methyl iodide in the presence of anhydrous sodium sulfate. Methyl 5-chlorofuran-2-carboxylate has been shown to have photocatalytic activity and isomers can be distinguished by vibrational spectroscopy. The synthesised product has been analysed by physicochemical techniques, such as microscopy and elemental analysis, which revealed that it is a centrosymmetric molecule with a functional group theory.
