• Description: 2,2,4,4-Tetramethylthietan-3-one is a triene and an ether. It is prepared by the reaction of acetone with trimethylsilyl chloride in the presence of benzene in a sulphenic solvent. 2,2,4,4-Tetramethylthietan-3-one can be used to prepare penicillin anhydride by refluxing it with penicillin and an acid anhydride in the presence of a base. 2,2,4,4-Tetramethylthietan-3-one is also used in the synthesis of norbornene.
