- 5-Iodo-2,6-dimethylpyrimidin-4-ol
5-Iodo-2,6-dimethylpyrimidin-4-ol (5IMP) is a synthetic antibiotic that is bacteriostatic and has a strong affinity for ribonucleic acid. It inhibits bacterial growth by interfering with the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. 5IMP inhibits the synthesis of guanine, which is needed for DNA replication. This antibiotic binds to the nitrogen atom in sulfamethoxazole, forming a covalent bond that prevents its conversion to an active form. 5IMP also inhibits the production of pyridoxal phosphate, which is required for vitamin B1 synthesis. This drug has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
