Spirapril is a drug that inhibits the activity of the enzyme angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). It is used for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure. Spirapril has been shown to reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic heart failure, but does not affect mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction. The drug also has anti-inflammatory properties that may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Spirapril is a prodrug and is converted into active form by esterases in the liver. Its metabolism is primarily hepatic and its elimination half-life is about 10 hours.
