Plicatol B is a compound that can be used as a sample preparation agent, an antimicrobial peptide, or as an anticancer agent. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and some viruses. Plicatol B is also effective against cancer cells in vitro. The MICs of Plicatol B against the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus were found to be 0.1 microgram/ml and 1 microgram/ml for Escherichia coli. The MICs of Plicatol B against the Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa were found to be 0.1 microgram/ml and 0.5 microgram/ml for Salmonella typhi. Plicatol B was also found to be active in vitro against cervical cancer cells (HeLa).
