It has been used in the clinical development of medicines for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 2-Hydroxy-2,2-bis(2-thienyl) acetic acid is chemically related to pyridinium compounds. It is a potent inhibitor of muscarinic receptors and has an anticholinergic profile similar to atropine.
