N-Benzyl-heptadecanamide is a neuroprotective compound that has been shown to have a neuroprotective effect. It has been shown to protect neurons from oxidative damage induced by glutamate and its analogs, as well as from the toxicity induced by beta-amyloid peptide. N-Benzyl-heptadecanamide has also been shown to reduce the injury in cultured neurons. It is extracted from a methanol extract of the seed of the plant Curcuma zedoaria and purified by liquid chromatography. The chemical structure of this compound is similar to that of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the brain. N-Benzyl-heptadecanamide has been used in China for health care purposes, such as diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, and as a synthetic intermediate for other compounds.
