• Description: Pitavastatin 3S,5R isomer Calcium Salt is a potent inhibitor of cholesterol biosynthesis. It is marketed as the hemihydrate form under the trade name Pravacol and is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Pitavastatin 3S,5R isomer Calcium Salt inhibits cholesterol biosynthesis by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, which converts 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) to mevalonate (MVA). The active metabolite, pitavastatin, binds to the regulatory region of HMG-CoA reductase and prevents it from converting MVA to HMG-CoA. This reduces the pool of HMG-CoA available for conversion to cholesterol. The inhibition of this enzyme slows down the production of cholesterol and decreases blood levels.
