- Cytochrome c oxidase
Cytochrome C oxidase is a protein found in the mitochondria and is the last enzyme in the electron transport chain. It catalyzes the reduction of oxygen to water and pumps protons across a membrane. Cytochrome C oxidase has been shown to have high rates of turnover, which make it an attractive target for regulation. Alcoholic bowel disease has been associated with decreased cytochrome activity, while increased activity has been associated with colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease. The mouse monoclonal antibody recognizes cytochrome C oxidase, which can be used as a biomarker for bowel disease. Cytochrome C oxidase has also been implicated in apoptosis pathways by regulating signal peptides that control cell death. Significant cytotoxicity can be observed when cells are exposed to this enzyme, leading to apoptosis through caspases activation and DNA fragmentation.
