Pyruvate kinase is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to phosphoenolpyruvic acid in the presence of a phosphate group, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and magnesium ion. It is an important enzyme in the glycolytic pathway and is activated by calcium ions. Pyruvate kinase is localized in muscle tissue, coagulation, and blood clotting. It has been used as a biological marker for animals, such as cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, rabbits, chickens, and turkeys. When it is expressed in hybridoma cells or transgenic mice, pyruvate kinase can be used as an immunodeficiency marker for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Pyruvate kinase has also been used to measure urea nitrogen concentrations and erythrocyte glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) activities in humans.
