Citrate lyase is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of citrate to acetate and oxaloacetate. The enzyme can be isolated from Klebsiella pneumoniae or from Escherichia coli by liquid chromatography and hydroxylamine treatment. Citrate lyase is an important component of the citric acid cycle, which is responsible for cellular respiration. Citrate lyase also has been shown to be involved in alkaline hydrolysis reactions. When combined with other enzymes, it can produce many different kinds of organic molecules, including amino acids, sugars, and fatty acids. Citrate lyase has been shown to have acetylation activity in addition to its decarboxylation activity.
≥0.20 unit/mg solid Enzymatic Acitivity: One unit will convert 1.0 micromole of citrate to oxalacetate per minute at pH 7.6 at 25 deg C.
