Description

Chloroperoxidase is a heme-containing enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of chloride ion to hypochlorite. It is found attached to a signal peptide that targets it to the periplasmic space. Chloroperoxidase has a coordination geometry that is tetrahedral, with four oxygen atoms in close contact with the heme iron atom. The redox potential of chloroperoxidase is -0.3 volts and its reaction mechanism involves transfer reactions between the substrate and the enzyme. This enzyme has been shown to have an activity of 1.5 milliunits per milligram and can be used for wastewater treatment or polymerase chain reactions (PCR). Chloroperoxidase requires an acidic environment, pH 3-6, and an oxidizing agent such as sodium citrate or potassium ferricyanide, which are often used in PCR reactions.
