- Aspartyl protease
Aspartic acid proteinase (ASP) is a proteolytic enzyme that cleaves proteins at the aspartic acid-histidine bond. ASP has been shown to have activity against cancer cells and may be used as a therapeutic agent for cancer treatment in the future. ASP is found in some strains of bacteria, such as Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli, but its expression plasmid can be obtained from a variety of sources. The enzyme has been shown to have an optimal pH of 7.0 and exhibits proteolytic activity with synthetic substrates. It also shows increased protease activity when mixed with trypsin or soybean trypsin. ASP binds to monoclonal antibodies that are specific to the amino acid sequence of the target protein, which can be used for therapeutic purposes.
