Tebuthiuron is a herbicide that inhibits the growth of plants by inhibiting calcium uptake into plant cells. This inhibition prevents the formation of the cytosolic calcium gradient, which is necessary for cell division. Tebuthiuron has been shown to have an effect on congestive heart failure and can be used as a model system for this disease. The mechanism of action of tebuthiuron involves binding to metal hydroxides in the soil and preventing nutrient uptake by plants. It also binds to the surface of plant cells, resulting in cytosolic calcium accumulation and changes in cellular membrane permeability. Tebuthiuron has been shown to inhibit hippocampal neuronal activity, although its mechanism is not well understood.
