The fluorescence of 1-iodopyrene can be used to detect the presence of copper oxide in an inert atmosphere. It is also used as a precursor to other compounds with optical or fluorescent properties. Functional groups on the molecule allow it to be transported and transferred from one place to another by diffusion, convection, or osmosis.
