Iron trisglycinate is a chelate of iron that is used as an iron supplement for the treatment of iron deficiency. Iron trisglycinate is manufactured by reacting ferrous sulfate with glycine to form an aminopolycarboxylic acid complex of ferric hydroxide and ferrous hydroxide. It contains no other metal ions, such as copper or zinc, which may interfere with absorption of iron in the digestive tract. Iron trisglycinate has been shown to be effective in treating iron deficiency in animals. This compound may also be useful as a model system for studying the interaction between metals and enzymes because it does not contain any interfering metal ions.
