5-Phenyl-pyrimidine is a homologous compound that contains phenyl groups. 5-Phenyl-pyrimidine has been shown to have neuroprotective effects and may be used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. 5-Phenyl-pyrimidine also has chiral properties, which means it can exist as two different isomers. The most common form of this drug is the erythro isomer, which binds to growth factors and neurotrophic receptors in the brain to protect neurons from damage. This analog of pyrimidine inhibits the activity of methoxy groups, which have been shown to have neurotoxic effects on neuronal cells.
5-Phenyl-pyrimidine has a mesomorphic phase at low concentrations and a ferroelectric phase at high concentrations. It also has an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) spectrum with two distinct peaks at 50 Hz and 100 Hz, respectively.
