2,2-Dimethyl-2H-chromene-6-carboxylic acid (DMCD) is a potent anticancer agent that is a natural product. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and inhibiting its activity. DMCD has also been shown to have strong antimicrobial properties against cryptococcus neoformans, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis. This compound is structurally related to chromene, a natural product with antihypertensive and anticancer activities. DMCD was isolated from an endophytic fungus growing on the roots of a plant found in Malaysia. There is limited information available about this compound's toxicity and mode of action in humans, but it has been shown to cause leukemia in mice through inhibition of myeloid cell proliferation.
