Description

2-(Diphenylphosphino)benzonitrile is a ligand that has been used extensively in coordination chemistry. This compound is of particular interest because it contains a trifluoromethyl group, which is an uncommon functional group. It also has a high degree of stereogenic character and can be synthesized in enantiopure form. The ligand forms stable complexes with transition metals such as palladium, platinum, and nickel, and can be used to introduce proton donors or acceptors into the metal-ligand complex. 2-(Diphenylphosphino)benzonitrile is generally prepared by the reaction of chlorobenzene with phosphorus trichloride to produce chlorophosphate esters. These esters are then hydrolyzed to produce phosphine oxide, which reacts with phenylmagnesium bromide or phenyliodonium bromide to form the desired product.
