It is a potent activator of the neuronal nicotinic receptor and is used in pharmacology and cell biology research as a ligand for detecting protein interactions. 18:0(2S-OH) ceramide has been shown to inhibit the ion channels that are activated by voltage or calcium ions. This inhibition can be reversed by increasing membrane potentials or blocking calcium channels. 18:0(2S-OH) ceramide also binds to the receptor sites of proteins such as peptides, antibodies, and other ligands.18:0(2S-OH)ceramide does not have any adverse effects on human health and is not toxic at high doses.
