4-Methyl-5-octanol is a natural product with insecticidal properties. It is a synergist that has been shown to be effective in combating weevils when combined with propionate. This compound also inhibits growth of the bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as the yeast Candida albicans. 4-Methyl-5-octanol has been isolated from plant tissue and chemically synthesized. The naturally occurring form of this compound is stereoselectively produced by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum, which produces it from fatty acids in its cell walls. Chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CI MS) was used to identify this compound in plant tissue, while NMR spectroscopy was used to confirm its chemical structure.
