5-(Trifluoromethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2(3H)-one is an immunoassay marker for the detection of malignant cells. This compound is a fluorinated analog of 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene, which has been shown to be a potent chemotherapeutic agent in some preclinical studies. It has been found that 5-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2(3H)one is more effective than 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene in inducing apoptosis and cell death in cancer cells. The trifluoromethyl group on the benzene ring confers on this compound resistance to chlorine atom strategies such as chlorination and monochlorination.
