Moxidectin is a member of the imidazolidinone class of antiparasitic agents that has been used for the treatment of various parasitic diseases. Moxidectin is active against many species of nematodes and arthropods. The mechanism of action is not well understood, but it seems to act as a potent inhibitor of serine proteases and fatty acid synthase in invertebrates. In mammals, moxidectin decreases insulin resistance and may improve chronic kidney disease by decreasing levels of serum amide. Moxidectin also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to decrease the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins.
