DTP3 is a vaccine that prevents polio, diphtheria, and tetanus. The vaccine is administered to infants and children in three doses. DTP3 is made up of a form of the bacteria that causes these diseases, weakened so they cannot cause illness but still can produce an immune response. The vaccine is given on the day of birth or within 24 hours after birth to prevent infection with the poliovirus during early infancy. The vaccine also contains diphtheria toxoid, which is a protein from the bacteria that causes diphtheria; tetanus toxoid, which is a protein from the bacteria that causes tetanus; and pertussis (whole cell) antigen, which is a component of the bacterium that causes whooping cough. DTP3 may be given at any age if it has not been previously administered as part of routine childhood immunization.
