Tert-butyl 2-(2-cyanophenoxy)acetate (TBPA) is a potential biomarker that has been shown to reflect the presence of an exogenous compound in the brain. This compound is used as an analytical reagent for the detection of sodium carbonate, which is a potential precursor to trifluoroacetic acid. The reaction mechanism for synthesis of TBPA is via transfer reactions from sodium carbonate and trifluoroacetic acid. TBPA is also a synergistic agent with other compounds and can be used in structural biology and neuronal death studies.
