Lanthanum chloride heptahydrate is a lanthanide metal ion. It has been shown to inhibit the production of TNF-α and other inflammatory cytokines, in addition to having radionuclide properties that can be used as a radiation tracer. Lanthanum chloride heptahydrate also has photocatalytic activity that can be used for the effective destruction of organic pollutants in water. The material has an acidic pH range and is thus biologically inert. Studies have shown that lanthanum chloride heptahydrate is capable of encapsulating tnf-α, which may make it useful for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
