Sodium hexanoate is a carboxylate that has been used as an absorption enhancer for drugs. Sodium hexanoate has been shown to be active against wild-type strains of bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. It contains a hydroxyl group and can react with inorganic acids to form sodium salts. The fatty acid chains of sodium hexanoate are cationic surfactants that can bind with proteins and hydroxyl groups on the surface of cells. This binding disrupts the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane, leading to cell death by osmotic lysis.
