Disodium tellurite is a chemical inhibitor that belongs to the group of p2 inhibitors. It inhibits the growth of human pathogens by reacting with metal ions in the cell, such as sodium citrate, to form metal hydroxides. Disodium tellurite also inhibits bacterial growth by causing changes in cellular morphology and thermal expansion. Disodium tellurite is capable of enhancing the effectiveness of other antibiotics, such as ampicillin, in treating bacterial infections. This compound has genotoxic effects on bacteria that are not resistant to it. Disodium tellurite is used for treatment of metals and organic compounds, and can be used to remove toxic substances from water sources. The reaction solution turns yellow-orange when disodium tellurite is added to it.
