2,4-Dimethyl-1H-indole is an indole alkaloid that is used as a growth regulator. It is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme arachidonate 12-lipoxygenase, which catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid to 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE). This leads to reduced cell proliferation and inhibition of tumor growth. 2,4-Dimethyl-1H-indole is also used as an antifeedant in animal feed. The reaction time for this compound is less than 1 minute. It has been synthetically prepared from pyrrole by the reaction with Grignard reagent and nitrogen atoms. Furfural and grignard reagents are involved in the synthesis.
