Methyl 4-chloro-3-hydroxybutanoate is a chemical compound that is an epimer of ethyl 3-hydroxybutanoate. It can be synthesized by the epimerization of ethyl 3-hydroxypentanoate with sodium methoxide in methanol. Methyl 4-chloro-3-hydroxybutanoate can also be prepared by the dehalogenation of methyl 4,4,4-trichlorobutyrate followed by hydrolysis and decarboxylation.
