4(7)-Nitrobenzimidazole is a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor that is used to treat bacterial infections. It inhibits the production of matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that break down collagen and elastin in the body. 4(7)-Nitrobenzimidazole has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Staphylococcus aureus. This drug also has inhibitory properties against other bacteria that may cause infection such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. 4(7)-Nitrobenzimidazole is not active against fungi or viruses. It is usually administered orally or intravenously and can be hydrolyzed by conjugating with adenine base to form 4-amino-
