4-Methylpyrimidine-2-thiol is a coordination compound that has the molecular formula C8H10N4S. The molecule consists of a central pyrimidine ring with two thiol groups and two methyl groups attached to it. It is soluble in water, ethanol, chloroform, and most organic solvents. 4-Methylpyrimidine-2-thiol is used as a ligand in coordination chemistry and as a reagent in organic synthesis. It also inhibits protozoan parasites such as Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica. In addition, this compound has been shown to have inhibitory effects on cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent protein kinase activity, which may be due to its ability to form covalent bonds with cysteine residues on the enzyme. The thione tautomer of this molecule can be observed using nmr spectroscopy
