4²-Bromo-2-nitrobiphenyl (4BNB) is an organic compound that has been synthesized and optimized in order to find its application as a brominating agent. It is used for the conversion of alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids and phenols into their corresponding bromides. The reaction mechanism starts with the formation of a diazonium salt from 4BNB and a nitrite ion. This intermediate reacts with magnesium to form an alcohol or phenol magnesium bromide complex. The second step is the elimination of hydrogen bromide from these complexes, which results in the desired product. 4BNB can also be used for the synthesis of biphenyl derivatives by reacting it with acetonitrile in the presence of hydrochloric acid and phosphite.
