Fenarimol is a nitroimidazole that has shown antimicrobial activity against a variety of organisms. Fenarimol is an inhibitor of multidrug efflux pumps and other enzymes, such as DNA gyrase, which are involved in the transport of drugs across bacterial membranes. Fenarimol has been shown to have genotoxic properties in vitro, but not in vivo. This drug also inhibits cell division by resecting the DNA helix at sites where it is phosphorylated. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit both mitochondrial and nuclear respiration pathways by inhibiting ATP synthase and succinate dehydrogenase.
Fenarimol is a potent inducer of energy metabolism and can be used for the measurement of nitrite ion concentrations in water samples. The matrix effect can be eliminated by using fenarimol as an internal standard, which allows for accurate measurements without interfering with the sample being analyzed.
