(-)-Quinpirole hydrochloride is a dopamine receptor agonist that has been shown to inhibit locomotor activity in rodents at low doses. This drug is a low potency, non-selective antagonist of the D2 and D3 receptors with a high affinity for the D4 receptor. (-)-Quinpirole hydrochloride has been shown to bind to voltage-dependent calcium channels, which may contribute to its anti-locomotor effects. (-)-Quinpirole hydrochloride also inhibits brain functions such as neurotransmitter release and neuronal firing by inhibiting voltage-gated calcium channels in the brain. (-)-Quinpirole hydrochloride may also have physiological effects on energy metabolism and hippocampal formation.
