4-Hydroxyindoline is a synthetic compound that is used as a dehydrative coupler in the synthesis of polymers. It can be produced by refluxing indoline with paraformaldehyde and an acidic ph. This process can also be conducted using human keratin, which yields a more pure product. 4-Hydroxyindoline is used in the production of polyurethane, polyester, and vinyl resins. It reacts with alcohols to produce reactive groups that are important for polymerization reactions. These groups include hydroxyl, carbonyl, and amino groups. The most common use of 4-hydroxyindoline is as a reactive dye in keratin fibers to produce staining effects.
